Wallaceburg Wins Back To Back Kent Junior Football Titles
Facing the UCC Lancers Saturday in Wallaceburg, the Tartans got off to a slow start, falling behind 21-7 after the first quarter. The Tartans however, would fight back, winning 47-29.
After a sparkling performance last week, Parker Gilhuly had another huge day for the Wallaceburg Tartans, scoring four long touchdowns of 86, 79, 75, and 50 yards. The football rookie, who also plays lacrosse in Wallaceburg, says winning the Kent title in his first season was amazing.
“I think it was a great experience for me on my first year of football and I was stoked, couldn’t have been happier,” said Gilhuly, who rushed for a total of 286 yards in the final. “The team came out a little jumpy and nervous I think, but when big plays happen and big hits everyone gets pumped up and wants to be out on the field.”
UCC couldn’t contain Wallaceburg’s running backs, as Jermaine Caldwell, and Trevor Bogaert also scored long touchdowns.
“The team played amazing today,” said Jermaine Caldwell, who collected a total of 114 rushing yards. “The boys upfront really did their job and allowed us to open up the running game for us. It was just an overall great feeling to win it back to back; first time in school history so it’s a great feeling.”
The UCC Lancers came out strong, but were unable to hold the 14-0 and 21-7 leads they carried early in the game.
Ross Krieger caught a 68-yard touchdown pass from UCC Lancers quarterback Owen Dorssers to open the scoring. Dorssers also had a 3-yard rushing touchdown of his own, and scored a two-point convert later in the game. Mike Lewis and Cole Gregg had the other touchdowns for the UCC Lancers.
Many of the players from Saturday’s Kent final will now move on to play club football with the Chatham-Kent Cougars Junior Varsity team.
