You’d think most young athletes would be all about the medals. Wallaceburg’s Maddy Broad however is wise beyond her years. She’s still winning medals, but for her, it’s about improving, and meeting her personal goal, which for the Canadian Age-Group Swimming Championships this month was three Senior National times.

Saturday, racing in the 100m backstroke, Broad achieved her goal, swimming a new personal best time of 1:05.26, good for a Senior National time, and a silver medal.

“I wanted the senior national times because you can be a slow swimmer and still get a medal,” said Broad of her reasoning behind aiming for Senior National times rather than medals.

“But the times are more important to me because it shows that I am improving in my swimming. This means I’m that much closer to reaching my goal of going to the Olympics one day.”

Broad, who is representing the Chatham Y Pool Sharks, now has three medals at the Age-Group Swimming Championships, which are taking place in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Earlier this week, Broad won a pair of gold medals in the 50m backstroke and 200m backstroke.
