Double Gold For Broad Already
Thursday, Broad, who swims with the Chatham Y Pool Sharks won gold in the 50m backstroke, touching in a time of 29.77.
The win was her second Senior National time, and second gold medal in as many events for the Wallaceburg resident, who is competing in the 13-year-old division. Broad’s time was also half a second faster than the winner of the 14-year-old competition.
With two goals under her belt, Broad isn’t fully satisfied, and still hopes to find herself on the podium again before the meet is over, however it’s not gold she’s looking for, it’s continuing to reach Senior National times as she has in her first two events.
“My overall goal this year is not to get medals, but to get as many Senior National times as I can get,” said Broad from her hotel in Winnipeg. “I want to get three, and I just received my second one tonight. I’m hoping for at least one more. I still have 5 more races.”
Wednesday in her first event, the 200m backstroke, Broad set a new personal best time of 2:19.59 and a qualifying time for the Senior Nationals, winning her first gold medal of the competition.
At last year’s Age-Group Championships, Broad won four gold medals and a silver in Quebec.
Thursday, Broad will be in chase of another gold medal and a Senior National time as she competes in the 50 backstroke.
Later this week she’ll also race in the 50 freestye (Friday), the 100 backstroke (Saturday), and the 200 IM, 50 fly, and 400 freestyle (Sunday).
Two Blenheim swimmers, Brendan Van Herk and Shania Van Herk are also competing this week in Winnipeg. Brendan Van Herk grabbed a 6th place finish in the 100m IM in the 14-year-old division Thursday.
