CHATHAM, ON — Kingsville’s Alyssa Getty has had a successful season so far. She came into the Golf Association of Ontario’s (GAO) Investors Group Junior Girls’ Championship on July 15, at Maple City Country Club, just a week after winning the CN Future Links Quebec title. Her strong play continued as she shot a four-under (68), a new competitive course record, to grab the opening round lead at the Junior Girls’ Championship.

Getty, the 17-year-old Team Ontario member, opened the round with a birdie on the first hole. She would drop to even after a bogey on three, but that would be the sole blemish on her card. She drained a birdie on eight before hitting three more on the back nine to finish at four-under.

Following Getty is her Team Ontario teammate Monet Chun. The Richmond Hill resident shot a one-under (71). Chun sat two-over after the front nine, but rallied with three birdies on the back. She is tied with Mitchell’s Courtney Tolton who also finished one-under.

Ottawa’s Grace St-Germain, another member of Team Ontario, is also in the hunt after an even-par round (72). St-Germain enters the event after winning the Quebec Women’s Amateur last week, and the GAO Junior Girls’ Match Play Championship the week before.

Three other players: Palgrave’s Claire Hernandez, Ridgeway’s Madeline Marck-Sherk and Burlington’s Madison Easterbrook all finished the round at two-over (74).

Chatham golfer and Maple City Golf Club member Brooke Mackinnon was tied for 38th after shooting an opening round 88. Fellow Maple City member Julia Moretto was tied for 51st after shooting 110.

Round two tee times begin Wednesday morning at 7:30 a.m. and run through until 10:50 a.m. After the round, the field of 53 will be cut down to the lowest 42 scores, including ties.
