Quad Memorial Night Saturday At Buxton
Merlin’s Eren Vanderiviere will be looking for a third straight Len Bryden memorial race victory in the Tirecraft Sport Stocks.
Vanderiviere led all 25 laps of the 2012 Bryden feature and took the lead on lap five to lead the rest of the way last August.
Vanderiviere leads the Sport Stocks with four feature wins this season and leads the division by 68 points in search of his fourth straight championship.
The race is held in memory of Len Bryden, who along with his wife Peggy ran South Buxton from 1981-91 and ’93.
Blenheim’s Andrew Reaume gave up the opportunity to race in the North-South 100 at Florence (Ky.) Speedway last Aug. 10 and instead drove Kirk Hooker’s No. 38 to victory in the first Gord DeWael memorial.
Reaume will be behind the wheel of Erick Walker’s No. W05 for the third time this season in the second annual DeWael memorial in the Westside Performance Plus UMP Late Models.
The race is held in memory of former track champion Gord DeWael, who died in 2013. He was among the inaugural Hall of Fame class inductees this May.
Reaume is already two-for-two in features in the Walker machine this year, including winning the Don Hendricks memorial on June 28 in dramatic fashion, passing Dale Glassford coming out of final turn on the last lap.
Leamington’s Justin Coulter had to go to the ‘B’ main just to make the field for last year’s Brian Outhouse memorial race.
Coulter went from the back to the front to win the Outhouse memorial in the Schinkels Gourmet Meats UMP Modifieds, named in honoured of the long-time track worker who died in 2004.
Coulter won the June 28 Modified feature this season with the No. 53 on his door, driving for points for Brad Simpson.
A new Cory Schives memorial race winner in the Tirecraft Mini-Mods will be declared as the defending champion Denis DeSerrano has moved to the Modifieds.
DeSerrano was the first ‘out-of-family’ driver to win the Schives memorial, named in honour of Cory Schives, who died in June, 2009, just days before his 18th birthday.
Schives worked on the Jones race team, which accounted for the first four memorial race wins – Nate McNally in 2009 and 2010, Shawn Jones in 2011 and Trevor Jones in 2012.
Pit Stops
- Scott and Lisa Schives are once again donating a bicycle as well as framed photographs of Gregg Haskell and Jeff Schives, courtesy of James MacDonald ApexOne Photo, to lucky Junior Fan Club members in honour of Cory. John Pinsonneault is also offering a free helmet airbrush, courtesy of his Smooth Custom Air business, to the winner of the Schives memorial Mini-Mod feature, or the highest place finisher who does not already have one of his custom paint-jobs.
- After reviewing last week’s Modified second feature race, the black flag given to Leamington’s Joel Dick was rescinded and he was credited with a 19th-place finish. Dick is 93 points ahead of Shrewsbury’s Jim Dale Jr., who moved into second in points thanks to his feature win and second-place finish behind Merlin’s Jeff Daniels in the mid-season championship earlier last Saturday.
- Chatham’s Jim Jones holds a 52-point lead over Ridgetown’s Dale Glassford atop the Late Model standings. Glassford won the night’s regular feature after sitting out the mid-season championship race, won by Chatham’s Brad Authier. Authier is 91 points behind Jones and two-time defending champion Gregg Haskell is 104 back, as Jones is the only driver among the leaders to start every feature this season.
- Vanderiviere’s lead sits at 68 over Merlin’s Steve Shaw, as they are tied with seven checkered flags each.
- Blenheim’s Brett Hope leads the Tirecraft Mini-Mods for a third straight week, 37 points ahead of Blenheim’s Trevor Jones, 76 up on Cottam’s Rob Quick and 87 up on Chatham’s John Pinsonneault, who enters the Schives memorial on a two-straight feature win streak.
- Blenheim’s Jeff Schives regained the lead atop the Autotech Bombers standings by 19 points over Chatham’s Chris Ellerbeck, who has held the lead since May 31. Schives will be driving Gerry Rivait Jr.’s No. 71 for his brother Cory’s memorial race
- The Southern Ontario Sprints will be back next Saturday, Aug. 2. It will also be South Buxton’s second Autograph Night, as the SOS drivers will join all five of South Buxton’s classes on the track at intermission.
