A very short bench and tired injured players was a little too much for the Chatham OPG Coyotes to overcome in the Women’s Provincial ball hockey tournament this past weekend in London. The Coyotes had to settle for silver medals as they fell to the New Tecumseh Extreme 5-0.

“The very strong Extreme had 18 runners to our 10, and we just couldn’t answer their pressure, they never gave us a break in either end of the rink. We had a very young team, our goaltender for the final and semi final is only 13 years old. I’m very proud of this teams play,” wrote coach Wyatt Williams to CKSN.

The Coyotes started the round robin with a 1-1 tie with Brampton who they out shot 29-11. Alena Fiala scored the Coyotes goal, with the assist going to Katrina Squazzin.

They then faced the Extreme and pulled out another 1-1 tie. Karly Dobbin scored the lone goal with Sydney Smith assisting. The very strong Extreme put 33 shots on the Chatham net, and Sydney Authier was outstanding between the pipes.

The Chatham Coyotes game three was a must win to advance and they were dominate over London in a 3-0 win. Karly Dobbin scored her second, assisted by Authier who was playing out. Katrina Squazzin scored the second goal and Chelsey Stevenson added an empty net goal to seal the game. Brooke Gibson got the shut out.

In Sunday’s semi final game the Coyotes faced a previously undefeated Vaughan team.

Chatham had to get permission to bring up 13 year old goaltender Marandee Hunter as Authier was injured and Gibson had work commitments. Chatham was down 1-0 at the half but came out strong with Karly Dobbin scored her goal of the tournament 1-1/2 minutes into the second half. One minute later Emily Williams blasted a slap shot past a shaken Vaughan goaltender. Megan Hunter assisted. Vaughan tied the game up on a power play with Chatham’s Rachael Tricker receiving a 5 minute major and game misconduct so boarding. The Chatham Coyotes were able to kill off the rest of the major and the game stayed tied for the rest of regulation.

Chatham started the 10 minute overtime with 35 seconds left in Dobbins high sticking penalty, which they killed off. At the 8:29 mark Megan Hunter put the ball past the Vaughan net minder to setup a rematch with the Extreme in the gold medal game.
