Blenheim’s Breanne Nicholas helped Team Canada to a rugby sevens gold medal in Brazil this past week at the FISU Championships.

Canada and Nicholas, a Western University rugby player, defeated France in the final 26-17 to win the championship.

“Very proud of this team’s effort,” said Canadian head coach Sandro Fiorino in a Rugby Canada news release.

“We had contribution from all 12 players and all of them had a part in our success today. Despite being down, earlier in the gold medal game, the team did not panic and showed strong resilience. Credit to the ladies, they were very unselfish and played for each other.”

“This medal shows that our pathway of CIS women’s rugby is working,” said Fiorino in the release. “We had a very young team and these players will have the chance to play at this level again in two years.”

Made up of University players such as Nicholas, who was her divisions OUA rookie of the year leading the Western Mustangs in scoring last season, FISU is the top tournament for University players in the world.

Nicholas also won a gold last summer with Team Canada’s U20 entry at the U20 Nations Cup in England.
