Dresden’s TJ Brodie has spent his offseason giving back. From strutting his stuff during the Catwalk for the Cure fashion show, to his new venture, selling skate guards, Brodie is doing what he can for cystic fibrosis.

Brodie, an NHL defenseman who plays for the Calgary Flames, grew up watching his cousin, Thamesville’s Ian Badder battle with cystic fibrosis, including undergoing a double lung transplant. From his fashion show fundraising, to now, selling skate guards with his number, the Calgary Flames logo, and a logo for cystic fibrosis, with the assistance of his NHL team, Brodie is doing all he can to help people, like his cousin, who battle with the disease.

“Growing up we were always very close, we were pretty much like brothers. We spent a lot of time together and I really got to see what he went through growing up, all the pills, the medication and just what a struggle it was, how hard it was for him breathe. Eventually to see him have the lung transplant and seeing how well he is today, I just wanted to help other kids like him that are dealing with that, and try to raise awareness for organ donation at the same time because it does make such a big difference in people’s lives,” Brodie told the Sydenham Current this week.

Brodie has dubbed his program, “T.J. Brodie: Skate in Strides for Cystic Fibrosis,” with money going to help Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

“The skate guards are for Cystic Fibrosis, just to raise money to donate to the charity and at the same time to raise awareness for organ donation,” Brodie said. “Calgary has been along the whole time, they are the one’s who organized it and helped me make it possible.”

The skate guards are on sale for $20 each. $10 of that price goes directly to charity, and the Calgary Flames and Brodie himself are matching the other $10, in order to donate $20 from every sale to cystic fibrosis charities.

Details on where you can get a pair of TJ Brodie’s skate guards, in support of cystic fibrosis, is forthcoming, and CKSN will update this story when that information is available.
