Hawks Skate To Silver In Windsor
Hosted at Windsor’s WFCU Centre, CKSS faced off against the top teams from Windsor and Essex, battling their way to the final, where they fell 4-0 to Villanova.
“We are a very young team, and I’m proud of the performance our girls put in,” said coach Ian Kennedy of the CKSS Golden Hawks’ final appearance.
“Our girls are learning how to overcome adversity, and the importance of competing every shift. This tournament was an excellent experience for our team, where we improved on the process of our game, even if the final outcome wasn’t what we wanted,” continued Kennedy. “Overall, I’m very proud of our athletes.”
Opening the tournament against the same Villanova team, the Hawks got out to an early 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Shayna Daly. Olivia Henry assisted on both, while Ray Spotton had a solo assist. Villanova however would fight back to tie the game, and scored with only 3 seconds left to take the 3-2 win.
CKSS would bounce back however in the second game of the tournament, defeating the top ranked St. Annes Saints 2-1. St. Annes entered the tournament with a 7-0-2 record, good for first in the WECSSAA standings. Shayna Daly scored the game winner midway through the second period, while Alexa Pugh had the other Golden Hawks goal. Haley Smith picked up two assists in the win, while Mikayla Demaiter was spectacular in net.
On day two of the tournament, CKSS opened the day facing Tecumseh Vista. The Hawks controlled the game from start to finish, taking a 5-0 win. Julia Stephens scored twice for CKSS, while Brooke Foster, Maia Collins, and Shayna Daly also scored. Assists in the game went to Foster, Sydney Sabourin, Olivia Henry, Alexa Pugh, and Taylor Lockwood. Sarah Woods took the shutout in net.
Finishing second overall in the round robin behind only Villanova, the CKSS girls advanced to the semi-final to face third place General Amherst. Sydney Sabourin, with assists going to Maia Collins and Ryanne Logan, scored the lone goal of the game, helping CKSS secure a 1-0 victory and a spot in the tournament final. Mikayla Demaiter had the shutout for the Hawks.
In the final, Villanova opened the scoring and never looked back, defeating CKSS 4-0.
The Hawks now carry a 11-6 record overall heading into the Christmas break. Following the game, local OHLer Brendan Johnston, a Chatham-Kent Cyclones and Chatham Maroons alumni, took the CKSS Golden Hawks team on a tour of the Windsor Spitfires facilities, capping off a successful week for the CKSS girls hockey team.
Congratulations!!!!!!!!
To CKSN, you call yourself Chatham Kent Sports Network but you report only what happens in the Chatham schools. WDSS played in a tournament in London awhile back and did very well, LKCS played in a tournament in Paris and won silver and there was no mention of it here
Hi PK,
Thanks for the feedback. We didn’t receive any information or a submission about Wallaceburg or Dresden’s tournaments. I’m from Wallaceburg, went to WDSS, taught and coached there, played minor hockey in Dresden. Trust me, I want to promote those communities and their successes more than anyone, however, I can’t publish something I don’t know about.
I do email the school’s each year asking for submissions, and it’s the same schools that reply each year. If you know anyone at the schools, or in particular, know about something like LKCS winning a silver, please send it to me directly, ian@cksn.ca, and I guarantee you it will be published.
Obviously there will be a slightly higher percentage of Chatham articles, because it is Chatham-Kent’s largest community. Usually people write me to tell me I have a bias toward Wallaceburg, but this is my first on the contrary.
Thanks again.
