Fillies Own Gold In Flamborough
The Kent County Martinrea Bantam BB Fillies began their quest of the three-peat at the Flamborough Winter Chill girls hockey tournament this past weekend, and didn’t disappoint, capturing their third gold at the tournament in as many years.
Friday morning against the Hamilton Hawks, Lauren Edwards opened the scoring. Jocelyn Delgado quickly added to gain a two goal lead, before Edwards notched her second of the game, for a 3-0 final. Defenceman Kaitlyn Van Coillie had a pair of assists, while single helpers were awarded to Haley Johnson, Megan Hakr, and Brooke Anderson. Tori DiGiorgio earned the shutout.
Next on the docket were the Kanata Rangers Saturday afternoon, a tough team from the Northern loop. Megan Hakr got the Kent Fillies on the board with a booming shot coming off the left wing, with Ray Spotton and Jessica Roelofs assisting. Jocelyn Delgado earned her second goal of the tournament with a great back-hand shot in close. Rounding out the scoring was Lauren Edwards, with Roelofs earning her second assist of the game, giving Kent County an identical 3-0 final. Mirandee Hunter earned the teams second shutout.
A win in the final game of the round robin would guarantee the Fillies first in the elimination round. Facing the Etobicoke Dolphins, the Fillies continued their dominance, putting together a 3-1 victory. Delgado continued her scoring ways with two goals in the game, while Lauren Kelly also got herself on the board. Assists were awarded to Kelly, Edwards, and Mallory Hooghiem.
The semi-final game had Kent County again facing the Hamilton Hawks. The girls pressed hard, dominating the play but found it difficult to beat the Hawks netminder. Finally, in the third frame, Lauren Kelly circled the slot and picked the top right corner scoring the games only goal.
In the finals, the Kent Fillies again faced the Kanata Rangers. Delgado set the pace, picking the top corner for the first goal of the game with Brooke Anderson assisting. With under two minutes left, the Rangers called a time-out and pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and the face off in the Fillies end. Lauren Edwards won a clean draw to Kelsea Ellis who made no mistake sending the puck the length of the ice into the Rangers empty net. Mirandee Hunter earned her second shutout of the tournament in the championship game.
Up next for the Kent County Fillies is the local portion of the OWHA provincials. The Fillies will play a home and home series with the Windsor Wildcats, Lakeshore Lightning, and Lambton Lady Sting hoping to earn a birth in Mississauga.
