Wednesday was National Signing Day for many NCAA hopefuls. Although the day has become a spectacle in college football, on Chatham, Ontario athlete, Sydnye Gagner also made her intentions clear, signing her National Letter of Intent to play NCAA Division I soccer for the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies.

“It’s a great D1 school, close to home so family can come watch me play and the program excited me because I might turn to the law as a career,” said Gagner, who will study Criminal Justice at Oakland University, which is located in Rochester, Michigan.

Gagner, a grade 12 student at Chatham-Kent Secondary School has played club soccer for the Eastside Kickers over the 4 years in Windsor. Although she started her soccer career in Chatham with the Chatham Strikers, Gagner has been travelling to play in Windsor since grade 5.

Now, Gagner, who trains off the field with Athletes Fuel Strength & Conditioning in Chatham, will work hard in preparation of her time with the Oakland University Golden Grizzlies women’s soccer team, to prove she belongs on the field. And while her on field results are important, Gagner also wants to continue her success in the classroom.

“My goal is to prove to my coach that I deserve a spot on the starting line,” says Gagner. “Not only am I there for soccer, but it’s important to me to continue to do well in school.”
