The Kent County Fillies Martinrea Bantam ‘BB’ team capped off a great season this past weekend bringing home the bronze medal at the OWHA Provincial Championships.

The girls opened up the tournament Friday morning facing the Cambridge Roadrunners. Brooke Anderson opened the scoring midway into the first period, driving home a rebound on a shot by Lauren Edwards. Cambridge answered back in the second frame to tie the game, but the Fillies kept pushing. Bailey Stewart restored the one goal lead when she slipped a puck through the legs of the netminder, with Mallory Hooghiem assisting on the play to help the Fillies to a 2-1 victory.

Friday night had Kent County pitted against the Toronto Leaside Wildcats. This was all Fillies from the drop of the puck with the team earning a 7-0 victory. Lauren Kelly paced the way with a pair of goals, while Jocelyn Delgado earned a goal and two assists. Ray Spotton, Brooke Anderson, Bailey Stewart, and Megan Hakr also contributed single goals. Single assists were given to Jessica Roelofs, Lauren Edwards, Kelsea Ellis, Anderson and Hailey Johnson.

Saturday morning the Kent Fillies played the final game of round robin action against the Whitby Wolves. A win would guarantee them a bye in the elimination rounds. This was a back and forth game with both teams trading chances. In the second period, after receiving a tape to tape pass from Britney Goodhand, Kaitlyn Van Coillie wired a hard wrist shot that found the back of the net. Both teams continued to press hard, but with the Whitby goaltender pulled, Jocelyn Delgado sealed the game with an empty net marker from Sarah Doom to secure the 2-0 win.

With a long layover between games, the girls entered the elimination rounds seeded third out of the remaining 12 teams. Their next victim would be the Kingston Wolves. In the first period, Bailey Stewart’s hard work got the girls on the board after receiving a pass from Lauren Edwards. Stewart returned the favor in the second period when she sent Edwards in alone picking the far corner. Once again Delgado finished the game with an empty netter giving the Kent Fillies a 3-0 victory.

The semi-final game on Sunday morning had Kent facing the number one ranked Ottawa Valley Thunder. This was a team Kent had traded wins with in the Clarington Applefest tournament earlier in the year. Ottawa came out hard and determined, but netminder Mirandee Hunter kept them at bay. The Fillies found their legs and began their push back in the second period. The third period saw similar action with both teams trading chances. Nothing was settled and overtime was required. Midway through the 10 minute overtime, the Thunder gained a breakaway. Hunter flashed a great poke check to thwart the goal, however, the Fillies were unable to secure the rebound and the ensuing scramble fell into the Fillies’ net for a 1-0 loss.

The bronze medal game had the Bantam BB Fillies meeting up with the Oakville Hornets. Megan Hakr got the FIllies on the board with a huge wrist shot coming in off the wing. Lauren Edwards was next to respond with Jessica Roelofs and Megan Hakr earning assists. Jocelyn Delgado finished the scoring with Brooke Anderson earning the final assist to take the game 3-0 and give the Fillies the bronze medal.

Mirandee Hunter played strong in net all weekend. In six games she posted four shutouts and a 0.33 goals against average. First year goaltender Tori DiGiorgio was a huge asset providing support all weekend.
