The Kingsville Kings have signed the first local Great Lakes Junior C Hockey League player for the upcoming Greater Metro Junior A Hockey League season, inking Wallaceburg Lakers forward Ryan Gruszka.

Gruszka played 35 games for the Wallaceburg Lakers in 2013-2014 and 2014-2015, scoring 19 goals and 28 assists for 47 points in that span.

“Anytime you can bring in a player of Ryan’s caliber is a plus,” says Kingsville Kings head coach Gary Astolas of signing Gruszka. “He has competed at some high levels in the past and will be a big piece to our puzzle; not to mention to bring in a player from the surrounding area is a huge plus from an organizational standpoint. I feel we are committing to putting together a team that will compete for a top spot right away and signing a player like Ryan is another big step in the right direction.”

Gruszka played for the Lambton Shores Predators in 2013-2014 after half a season in Wallaceburg, and played in three separate Junior A leagues – the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League with the Cochrane Crunch, the Alberta Junior Hockey League with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons, and the Maritime Hockey League with the Campbellton Tigers – last season before returning to Wallaceburg.

Last season with Wallaceburg, Gruszka had 9 points in 9 games.

Gruszka has signed a 2015 GMHL Tender Card which will protect his rights for the upcoming GMHL entry draft with Kingsville.

With GMHL Junior A clubs now located in Kingsville, Komoka, London, and Norfolk, other local players are expected to be signed and drafted in the GMHL draft.
