Chatham’s Marley Blommers will call the USA home next Fall as the six-foot-four basketball prospect signed with Marianapolis Preparatory School in Thompson, Connecticut, where he will play for the Marianapolis Golden Knights.

“I think it will open a lot of doors for me, both academically and athletically,” said Blommers, who currently studies at Chatham-Kent Secondary School, where he is in grade 11.

“They can help me improve as an athlete and a student. I’m looking forward to the level of competition, and playing and studying in a focused environment.”

Blommers, who plays AAU basketball for the Michigan Soldiers, as well as high school basketball for the CKSS Golden Hawks, had multiple offers from East Coast, chose Marianapolis for the school’s mix of on and off court assets.

“Their coach he was open and inviting to me. He really welcomed me, which helped choose Marianapolis,” says Blommers of head coach Andrew Vitale.

“As well, it’s just a beautiful campus, and they have an excellent basketball, and academic program.”

For Blommers, who received a merit award and financial aid from the school based on his 3.7 GPA and on court ability, the move is a step toward his ultimate goal of playing NCAA basketball.

“One of my largest goals is to play college basketball, more specifically Division I, but any level would be a blessing,” he said.

Blommers, who was touted by Canadian Basketball website North Pole Hoops as a player to watch for the Class of 2017, and has already received interest from Ivy and Patriot League schools, will reclassify when he arrives at Marianapolis to give himself two seasons of eligibility, before he decides which University he will attend with an interest in studying sports medicine or physical education.

For now however, Blommers will focus on preparing himself for his next step up the basketball ladder.

“I’m just going to be staying in the gym, playing with my Michigan team, and continuing to work on my game.”

With five graduating seniors, Blommers will have a chance to make an instant impact at Marianapolis Prep when he arrives on campus in September 2015.
