Local Swimmers Compete In Canadian Championships

The Canadian Age Group Championships began today in Quebec City with three local swimmers taking part in the 5 day pool competition and 1 day open water competition. Brendan Vanherk is representing Blenheim Blast Swim Team while Madison Broad and Genevieve Sasseville are representing the Chatham Y Pool Sharks. The competition has brought together 860 swimmers from across Canada as well as International Athletes from Bermuda, Mexico and USA.
During the first day of the pool competition, all three swimmers competed in their individual races with each swimmer making at least one final. Brendan Vanherk of Blenheim Blast had three individual races today of which he made finals in 100 Butterfly and 200 Backstroke while also swimming 50 Breaststroke in prelims. Competing in the Men’s 15 year old category, Brendan finished 8th in 200 Backstroke with a time of 2:14.20, 9th in 100 Butterfly with a time of 59.49 and had a three way tie for 30th in 50 Breaststroke with a time of 33.95.
Competing for the first time ever at Canadian Age Group Championships, Genevieve Sasseville of the Chatham Y Pool Sharks swam 100 Butterfly in the Women 12 & Under category where she went a personal best of a 1:09.37 in prelims. This qualified Genevieve for a final swim for the first time, at which point she then swam 100 Butterfly again with a time of 1:09.66 and finished 9th overall. Madison Broad, also of the Chatham Y Pool Sharks, raced in 200 Backstroke in the Women’s 14 year old category where she swam her way to a gold medal in finals with a time of 2:20.87
