October 6: Local Sports Briefs

The Wheatley Omstead Sharks have unveiled a new logo and look for next season.

– Blake Rutckyj was the hero for the Amherstberg Admirals as he netted the overtime winner at the 3:22 mark of the extra frame in a 5-4 win over the Wheatley Sharks. The Admirals are tied with Essex for first place in the Great Lakes Jr C Hockey League.
– Chatham’s Derek Whitson will be representing Canada once again as he was named to the National Sledge Hockey team. Whitson has been patrolling the blue line for Canada’s squad since 2007.
– Wallaceburg’s Kevin Stirling really is sterling! The local weightlifter brought home a silver medal from the International Powerlifting Master’s World Championships. He bench pressed 341lbs, squatted 429lbs and deadlifted 444lbs. Stirling competed in the men’s 60-69 93kg weight class.
– Jessica Jamieson of Wallaceburg was 6-8 and drove in three RBI’s for the St Clair Saints in OCAA Women’s Softball action. The saints also got five RBI’s from Mackenzie Noah of Thamesville in their doubleheader sweep of Mohawk College.
