The Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks girls hockey team went 3-0 Monday to win the Stratford St. Michael Girls Hockey Tournament.

“Our girls competed hard all day,” said head coach Ian Kennedy. “We beat three good teams today. We are very proud of the effort our Hawks put forward in each zone today. From our goaltending, to our offensive attack, our players showed they want to win, and that they can overcome adversity.”

CKSS opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over Eden High School of St. Catherines. Payton Sabourin opened the scoring for the Golden Hawks, while Emma Doom scored the winner. Jesse McPherson made 29 saves in the win in net.

In the semi-final, the Golden Hawks played Guelph’s Centennial CVI, shutting out the Spartans 2-0. Captain Sydney Sabourin, and Shayna Daly had the CKSS goals, while Marandee Hunter picked up the shutout in net making 19 saves.

Facing Brantford Collegiate in the championship game, who eliminated last year’s OFSAA gold medallist, Stratford St. Michael to advance to the final, CKSS fell behind 1-0 in the first. Carly Belanger broke the shutout in the second period, before Sydney Sabourin scored midway through the third to lift the Hawks to a 2-1 victory. McPherson took the win in net for CKSS.
