The Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks won their third straight tournament this week, capturing the Southern Ontario Classic championship in Windsor, Ontario.

The Hawks opened their tournament on the wrong foot, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Holy Names Knights, with Sophie Maine scoring the only goal for CKSS.

CKSS bounced back in their second round robin game edging L’Essor 3-2. Camlille Blain, Emma Doom, and Shayna Daly scored in the win.

In their final round robin game, the Golden Hawks defeated the St. Anne Saints 2-1, in what would turn out to be a tune up for the championship game. Carly Belanger and Shayna Daly had the goals.

Advancing to face Villanova, who currently sit atop the WECSSAA standings, in the semi-final, CKSS put together a dominant performance featuring goals from Ryanne Logan, Carly Belanger, and Megan Hakr. Villanova broke CKSS’ shutout late in the third, but the Hawks secured their spot in the final with a 3-1 decision.

Alison Stephens registered 3 assists from the backend in the round robin and semi-final.

The championship game again saw CKSS matched up against St. Anne after the Saints ousted Holy Names in the other semi-final. The Hawks peppered the Saints net, but it wasn’t until midway through the third period that CKSS broke the deadlock on a Payton Sabourin slapshot. Jessie McPherson registered the shutout in the 1-0 final.
