(WHEATLEY, ON) – The woeful Wallaceburg Lakers landed in Wheatley last night looking to add a second win to their 2016-17 record. Their celebration was put on hold as the Sharks controlled the play en route to a 4-2 victory in front of an announce 284 fans.

The 1st period was a subtle affair with Wheatley dominating 19-9 in shots, but scoring on a strange play. Hometown native Eric Prudence took the puck behind the Lakers net and banked a shot in off goalkeeper George Hill. The goal, assisted by Mitchell Prudence and Delaney MacDonald, would stand as the only tally of the opening 20 minutes.

During the middle frame, Wallaceburg showed a bit more gumption, logging 14 shots on Erik Morneau between the pipes for the Sharks. However, it was Wheatley who uploaded two more goals spaced evenly during the period.

Cole Butler and Antonio Ciampa set up Alixe Saliba on the powerplay at 8:53 followed by an even strength goal from Ciampa, who was helped by Quinton OBrien at 15:49.

Down by three goals, Wallaceburg eased off the pressure as Wheatley held a 13-8 margin in shots during the final period. The Sharks were quickly rewarded with their 4th notch as Justin Pinsonneault of Belle River beat Hill at the 38 second mark, assisted by MacDonald and Curtis Rodrigues.

It wasn’t until late in the game that Wallaceburg avoided being shut out as Trevor Waller and Matt Farrugia scored less than a minute apart, the latter with a man advantage.

The win improves Wheatley’s record to just 2 games below .500 at 14-16-1 while the Lakers dropped to 1-30-1 on the year.

The Sharks travel to Mooretown Wednesday night to take on the Flags (14- 15-3) in a battle for 5th place in the PJHL West. Wallaceburg welcomes Petrolia on Wednesday night.
