A trio of Chatham-Kent basketball players will be heading to St. Clair College in Windsor next season to suit up for the Saints in OCAA women’s basketball action.

Twins Jana Kucera and Logan Kucera, a pair of Chatham-Kent Secondary School students decided after weighing a number of options to attend St. Clair College.

The pair will be joined by 5’8″ shooting guard Jaimi Chauvin of Wallaceburg.

“She shoots the ball very well off of the dribble and can extend it past the 3 point line. Jaimi is a tough defender, who rebounds the ball well at both ends of the court,” said Wallaceburg Tartans head coach Janine Day of Chauvin. “Jaimi is an excellent teammate who leads by example both on and off of the court.”

Day has also coached the Kucera twins in the past, and believes they’ll bring a lot of skill to the St. Clair Saints’ roster.

“She is an athletic presence on both the offensive and defensive end of the court,” Day said of Logan Kucera. “Logan attacks well off of the dribble and can pull up from mid range. Logan can be used to guard the opposing teams top guard. Logan’s work ethic at practices is a key to her success.”

“She is able to control the game for her team as the primary ball handler,” added Day of Jana Kucera. “Jana shoots the ball very well from 3 point range and is able to get to the paint in a half court setting. Jana’s skill and athleticism make her valuable in all aspects of the game.”

For the Kucera’s, who will study Fitness and Health Promotion, they chose St. Clair College for a variety of reasons.

“We love sports and being physically active so we wanted to select a program that would allow us to study what we are already interested in,” the duo said. Eventually, we would love to work with special populations, keeping them active and fit. St. Clair’s Fitness and Health Promotion program is the perfect place for us to start. We are familiar with the campus and feel lucky to be playing in one of the newest gyms in the province. The coaches and the St. Clair players made us feel like a part of the athletic family since we first met with them.”

Staying and playing together for Jana Kucera and Logan Kucera was also an important factor in their school decision.

We have been teammates our entire lives – it would be strange for us to go in different directions,” they said. “Our game is stronger when we play together and we cannot wait to see what it is like to play together at the next level.”

The St. Clair Saints basketball team in recent seasons has been powered by another local product, Wallaceburg’s Torrie Handsor, who helped her team to a 12-6-0 record last season.
