Chatham’s Derek Whitson took his talents out West, and helped Team Alberta win a National sledge hockey title this past weekend.

Whitson, who now lives in Medicine Hat, Alberta, scored twice in an Alberta 3-0 championship game win over Team Quebec. In total, he had 6 goals in 4 games.

A two time Paralympic Team Canada member, Whitson was injured shortly after the last Paralympics, and is hoping his performance at the National level will entice Team Canada to give him another look this year.

““To know that I was able to get back, but not only that, be able to be a key contributor, I wanted to send a message that I’m hoping to have an opportunity to play for my country again, that I still have more in me. I hope they see that and I get an invite,” Whitson told the Medicine Hat News.

Whitson last played for Canada at the 2014 Sochi Paralympics, helping his team to a Bronze medal.

Although he was a defender with Canada, Whitson played centre at the National Championships with Team Alberta.
