Keely Baggio Captaining Lancers, Taking On Leadership Role
Baggio, a UCC Lancers alumni, knows her role is changing this season as she serves not only as a veteran, but as team captain.
“This year being the captain of the team, a big role for me is leading by example to keep up the intensity in training sessions and in games,” said Baggio. “Also being a mentor to my teammates especially the new incoming rookies by answering any questions they have while making them feel comfortable and welcomed.”
Last season, Baggio proved herself as one of the OUA’s top players, being named an OUA West Second Team All-Star on defense.
Despite her own success, it’s team success Baggio is still aiming for, which she believes the Lancers are poised for.
“The team looks strong this year and we do have some depth which is important as some of us including myself are battling some injuries right now. Probably the biggest goal we have this year is making it to Final Four like we did two years ago, and ultimately winning one of those two games there for an OUA medal.”
According to Baggio, she believes the team’s early chemistry, and the talent on the roster will go a long way to achieving these goals.
“I’m really looking forward to this season because I can already tell we have great team chemistry and everyone gets along really well,” she said. “I think we have the personnel that will score goals this year, in addition to having a strong midfield and defensive line so we will be a tough team to beat.”
Windsor lost their season opener to Guelph 2-0 this past weekend.
