The UCC Lancers were less than one second from overtime, when their season came to an end in Tuesday’s SWOSSAA ‘AAA’ boys hockey final in Chatham.

The Villanova Wildcats scored with 0.9 seconds remaining to defeat UCC 4-3, securing Villanova’s place at OFSAA.

“We started out very strong. Displaying a readiness for the game,” said UCC head coach Greg Mallette.

In the first 10 minutes of the game in fact, his team had hit two cross bars, and took a 1-0 lead off a Daniel Fraleigh goal.

Villanova however, would fight back.

“As the game went on after trading goals and eventually being down a goal twice the team showed great resiliency to dig deeper, keep working hard, and absorb the physical play,” said Mallette of his UCC Lancers squad.

“The third period was set up like an overtime, trading chances throughout. Ultimately falling just short but I am so proud of our guys from start to finish. Nothing to hang our heads about.”

UCC also received goals from Chandler Glassford and Matt Gaudrault in the game.

UCC was the first place team in the LKSSAA regular season and LKSSAA playoff champions.
