Incredible Year, More To Come For James McEwan
Playing on a star studded University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds team however, that’s exactly what happened.
“The experience was obviously incredible,” said McEwan who spent four seasons with the OHL’s Guelph Storm. “Playing on a team that had the depth and the talent we did while everyone still being so close with one another and be so willing to put their body on the line for the guy sitting right beside them was a testament to what it takes to win . As far as I’m concerned I have 23 new brothers that I’ll always remember.”
When McEwan refers to his team as deep and talented he means it. In fact, the Varsity Reds roster this year featured four NHL draft picks, and several players with professional hockey experience, along with several ex-CHL captains.
With that much depth, McEwan had to learn to adapt, after being an OHL veteran who was counted on to produce, compiling 136 points over 239 OHL games.
“My first year at UNB has been amazing. Obviously not playing as many games as in the OHL was an adjustment, but I think you use just as much energy in the 30 game schedule with having to balance your academics as well.”
McEwan dressed for 12 games this season, notching 6 points, and added 2 assists in 2 playoff appearances.
“With not playing every game it was an adjustment for sure, but I stayed positive and looked at practice as an opportunity to continue to get better every single time I was out there.”
“Next year will be an exciting year and I’m expecting to just find a way to make a difference and an impact with every opportunity I’m given in every game.”
