Jamieson Tour Opens In Blenheim, Polowick Wins

Willow Ridge in Blenheim

Just over 70 golfers took the course Sunday at Willow Ridge Golf Club in Blenheim to contend with intermittent rain, gusting winds, and saturated course conditions. Despite these challenging circumstances, the day yielded some very impressive scores.

Chatham’s Callahan, Polowick was the Junior Boys champion.

In the Junior Boys’ Division, two players managed to fire sub-70 rounds. The first player to do so was Tyler Hurtubise (Sutton Creek), who carded a three-under par 69. He was bested by just one other player, Callahan Polowick of Chatham, who used nines of 33-34 to tally a 5-under par 67. Polowick’s bogey-free round included 13 pars and 5 birdies, thanks in part to a hot putter.

In the Junior Girls’ Division, Kyla Charlebois (Pointe West) took home the victory with a round of 83. Using four pars and a birdie to card a 39 on her front-nine, Charlebois finished her round 4 shots ahead of runner-up Vanessa Ardovini (Roseland).

In the Collegiate Women’s Division, it was a duel between Gioia DiCiocco (Erie Shores/Windsor Lancers) and Melanie Burgess (Roseland/Windsor Lancers), who both recently returned from the Canadian University Championships, where they represented the Windsor Lancers. After the round concluded, it was Burgess who emerged victorious, carding a round of 84.

Lastly, in the Collegiate Mens’ Division, a playoff was needed to determine a champion for the day. Both Blake Dell (Beach Grove/Ohio Wesleyan University) and Blenheim’s own Finn O’Brien (Willow Ridge/Guelph Griffons) carded rounds of 73, and headed to the par-5 tenth hole for the playoff. O’Brien was safely on the green in 2 after finding the fairway with his drive, while Dell carved a beautiful shot around the tree-line on his second shot, leaving him roughly 20 yards left to the pin. Dell pitched up to about 10 feet and just missed his birdie putt, and O’Brien capitalized by two-putting for birdie and the victory from 40-feet.
