Nicholas Thrilled To Be Headed To The Olympics
She’ll enter the Games with Canada’s Rugby 7s team, after they qualified earlier this year with a strong performance at the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
“One of our main goals leading in to this past season was to secure a top 4 qualifying spot,” said Nicholas of playing for an Olympic position in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, where the top 4 teams earned an automatic entry to Tokyo 2020.
“As a team we feel accomplished to finish the season top 3 to secure that qualifying spot in the Olympics. For me it hasn’t fully sunken in for the fact that we have a whole season ahead of us still prior to the actual Olympic Games, but I am thrilled.”
Leading into the qualifier, Nicholas and her Canadian teammates knew they had to bring their best game to guarantee entry to the Olympics.
“There will always be pressure to perform well, since we hold ourselves to a high standard, but that pressure of qualifying is now not added for next season.”
Nicholas and Canada are currently at the Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru.
For Nicholas, a Blenheim product, the thrill of qualifying for the Olympics, and playing at the top of her sport is a dream come true.
“Growing up I’ve always wanted to be a professional athlete and have dreamed of going to the Olympics. I am looking forward to the whole experience of the Olympic Games.”
Now, it’s full steam ahead in preparation for the Olympics.
“We still have a few events to attend that we need to focus on prior to the Olympics, and those will always be used as a chance to continue to improve, and prepare.”
