Grant Spence and Craig Spence have been two notable hockey names in Chatham in recent seasons.

Both have played for the Chatham Maroons – Grant in 2017-2018 and Craig in 2018-2019. They were both OHL Draft picks – Grant in 2016 by the Oshawa Generals and Craig in 2018 by the Mississauga Steelheads.

Now, they’re playing together, for the first full season of their lives with the OJHL’s Junior A Georgetown Raiders.

For the brothers, who were born in 2000 and 2002, their age gap has kept them apart until now, allowing for this season to serve as a unique experience for the duo.

“It’s pretty unreal, you grow up playing playing in the basement everyday together,” said older brother Grant. “Now to be able to lace them up and play in a competitive league with him is a dream.”

For Craig, having his older brother already playing Junior hockey helped him with the move away from home and the transition to the league.

“It has been a great season playing alongside my brother Grant,” said Craig. “It has helped me join a new league comfortably. I feel like I have learned a lot more than I would have without him.”

Where their hockey journey will take them from here? Who knows, but for now, the duo are simply enjoying their time together.

The Spence’s also have a younger sister, not to be forgotten, Ashlynn, who plays for the Chatham-Kent Crush Bantam ‘A’ team.
