CK’s Top 10 Sports Stories of 2020: #8 Indigenous Athletes Shine
In 2020, we made a point to increase our coverage of local Indigenous athletes from Walpole Island and Moraviantown.
But our local athletes made it easy for us by racking up some impressive accolades.
Kaitlyn Isaac won an Ivy League championship in her first season with Cornell University. Cornell was a favourite for a run a National championship when COVID-19 shut things down.
Notah Hopkins was a first round draft pick of the Six Nations Arrows in the Ontario Junior A Lacrosse League draft.
Mattea Deleary was an OCAA Second Team All-Star, leading her Fanshawe Falcons to an OCAA championship. Deleary was also named CKSN’s women’s athlete of the month in February.
We also ran stories about Marshall Powless becoming an NLL draft pick, Taryn Jacobs and Samara Whiteye emerging as young hockey prospects, Legacie Blackbird’s success on the court, NHLer Brandon Montour, Maddy Lavoie’s success as an NCAA swimmer, and other local athletes including Tyler Brown, Ferrah Blackbird, and Katreena Whiteye.
These stories of the successes of our local Indigenous athletes were some of our most popular from 2020.
