Blackbird and Fischer earn silver medals at national championship
The Lambton College women’s basketball team will return from the Canadian college women’s basketball championships with a silver medal.
This was Lambton College’s first national championship appearance.
The Lions won two games to advance from the Elite Eight to the finals, losing to host Lakeland College 64-55 on Saturday in Lloydminster Alberta.
The Lions, who are coached by former Wallaceburg Tartans coach Janine Day, have two former Tartans on their roster who are key members of the Lions.
Walpole Island’s Legacie Blackbird is the team’s starting point guard. Blackbird had five points in the final, playing 31 minutes and dishing out a team-high four assists.
Wallaceburg’s Brett Fischer was named a CCAA tournament first-team all-star. In the final she led her team with 16 points, 14 rebounds, and 6 steals, while playing 38 minutes.
Marissa Beselaere from Chatham also played on this team. How do you miss that?
She started the season on the playing roster, but wasn’t on the roster in the new year.
