Maroons win triple overtime thriller

The Chatham Maroons tied up their playoff series at a game apiece, defeating the LaSalle Vipers 5-4 in triple overtime, Sunday night at Chatham Memorial Arena.

Jacob Cloutier ended the game after 111 minutes, scoring on a shot 11:15 into the third overtime. The Maroons were on a 5 on 3 powerplay.

The Maroons trailed 4-2 heading into the third period, but received quick goals from Chase Pettipiece and Aidan Edwards to tie the game up. Rorey  Elson and Colton Henderson scored the other Maroon goals.

The teams were tied at four for the next almost 68 minutes, as both Maroon goalie Tommy O’Donnell and LaSalle goalie Tre Altiman made highlight reel saves in the third period and the three overtime periods.

What made the game even more remarkable was the Maroons were missing Sam Warriner for the majority of the game, as he was kicked out of the game for a checking from behind penalty.

The Maroons also started the game down one player, as they dressed 17 skaters instead of the 18 allowed. Rookie call-up Chase Pettipiece from the U16 Chatham-Kent Cyclones, played well with a goal and an assist.

The best-of-seven series heads to LaSalle on Wednesday night for Game 3 and back to Chatham on Thursday for Game 4.
