While living in Tilbury, Montour played for the Chatham-Kent Cyclones AAA hockey team in the winter and for the Windsor Warlocks minor lacrosse teams in the summer. Montour won two gold medals and a silver with Team Iroquois at the national lacrosse championships.

Montour played Junior B hockey, a year in the USHL and a year of college hockey with University of Massachusetts Amherst before becoming a second-round draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks, Montour also played with the Buffalo Sabres before he played with Florida.
