Elmer Skov 1932-2024

Elmer Skov, a key member of the 1960 Chatham Senior Maroons which won the Allan Cup, died on July 6. He was 91 years-old.

After his playing days he was a key part of Chatham Maroons junior hockey teams for a number of years.

Skov’s wife died last year. He has three children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Skov, was born in Wheatley and raised in Windsor. He played for the OHA Windsor Spitfires and moved on to playing in the OHA Senior league. With only six teams in the NHL at the time, the OHA senior league was a strong league.

After playing in Owen Sound, Skov was moved to Windsor and was traded to Chatham in 1959.
In Skov’s first season with Chatham, the Maroons defeated the Trail (B.C.) Smoke Eaters in Trail, nine points to one in an eight-point series in the Canadian senior hockey championship to win the Allan Cup.

After he retired as a player, Elmer joined the Maroon’s George Aitken and Harold MacFarlane as a manager and defensive coach in the 67-68 season and would be involved in some capacity with the team for the next 24 years. His only break would come in the mid seventies to again coach one of his boys in minor hockey.

Skov’s credibility as a player had him on the ice regularly with the teams as a coach and instructor, but most of this time was spent as a general manager. His job as a manager was respected by other teams in the league as well and he assumed the convenorship of the Western Ontario Junior B League in the mid 80’s.
