Walpole Island First Nation’s Legacie Blackbird was named the Lambton College female student-athlete of the week for the week of January 13-20 in recognition of her efforts on the Lambton College women’s basketball team.

Blackbird, a fourth-year guard, gave the Lions a boost on both ends of the floor on Jan. 18 against Redeemer. Playing a team-high 36 minutes, Blackbird’s two-way play was on full display as the Lions picked up a wire-to-wire win over Redeemer, 61-39, to move up to fourth in the OCAA West Division standings.

Against the Royals, Blackbird recorded seven points, six rebounds, five assists, three steals, and a blocked shot while shooting 33.3% from the field. Her six rebounds and five assists were both season-high marks.

Five of her seven points came in the third quarter as the Lions built a 21-point lead through three quarters.

On top of her well-balanced stat line, it was her overall intensity on both ends of the floor that played a big role in the team win. Blackbird and company held the Royals to just 16.7% shooting from the floor and 10.0% from three-point range.

For the year, Blackbird is averaging 5.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game.
