Local skaters qualify for provincial championships

Local skaters, Ethan Xiao and Addisyn Veccia, have qualified for the upcoming 2024-2025 Provincial Championships, being held this Friday through Sunday, at the Stratford Rotary Complex, in Stratford, Ontario.

Xiao and Veccia are two of more than 500 skaters from across the province who will take part.

This event features the best in the Province in Synchro (Star 6 & 8); as well as Singles, Pairs, Ice Dance and Artistic categories.

Xiao, who turns 18 this week, secured his spot after winning the Gold Men’s event this past January at the Provincial Series LaSalle event.

Veccia, 17, secured her spot after the Provincial Series concluded last month, with an impressive season in both Star 9 and Star 10 Ladies. She will compete in the Star 10 Ladies category this weekend.

Teghan Meredith, 15, is patiently waiting for a call-up to compete in Star 5 Ladies, as she is currently listed as an alternate for the event. Meredith has been holding onto hope, since December, when she had a nearly perfect skate at the Provincial Series Stratford Event.

Xiao and Meredith train at the Chatham Skating Club, with coach Laura Smith, while Veccia trains in Ridgetown, Brantford and Chatham, with a team of coaches including Deb Veccia, Alison Purkiss and Laura Smith.

Admission to the event is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors & children (cash only) at the door.
