A group of local athletes is looking for the community’s support as it prepares for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Members of the Chatham Pool Sharks swim team and the Chatham Wildcats basketball organization will be heading to the International Children’s Games in Taiwan this August, to compete in swimming and girls’ 3×3 basketball. The local delegation will be among over 1000 athletes from as many as 30 countries taking part in the games.

The International Children’s Games provide athletes with opportunities to compete against youth from around the world while building friendships, cultural understanding, leadership skills, and community pride.

Organizers say the experience is a chance to re-establish Chatham-Kent’s presence on the international stage and showcase the strength of local athletes and programs.

A number of fundraisers have already been held to support the teams, with a barbecue scheduled at Sobeys in Chatham July 12.
