Wheatley Forces Game Seven With Another Overtime Win
After falling behind 3 games to 1 in the Great Lakes finals, the Wheatley Sharks have battled their way back, and now face a winner takes all game seven against the Belle River Canadiens. Sunday night in Wheatley, the Sharks needed two late goals to even the game, followed by Kurtis Ouellette’s overtime winner to take game six 6-5.
At the midway point of the second period, things did not look good for the Wheatley Sharks as Belle River led by a score of 4-1. The lone Wheatley goal to this point in the game came shorthanded from Shawn Quigley.
Then on the powerplay, Andy Stevenson scored to make the score 4-2 heading into the third period.
Josh Tremblay scored to open the third period, however Belle River sniper Chris DiNatale quickly answered back leaving Wheatley trailing 5-3 with less than 5 minutes remaining in the third period. Wheatley was not done though as Dylan Cosford scored to cut the Belle River lead to one, followed by Tremblay’s second of the game, which sent the home crowd into a frenzy as he tied the game with only 1:48 left on the clock.
In the overtime frame, each team exchanged chances before Kurtis Ouellette, the Great Lakes Junior C defenseman of the year, claimed his place as a Wheatley hero scoring the overtime winner on the powerplay.
Game 7 returns to Belle River Monday night at 7:30pm.
