Chatham-Kent and the Chatham-Kent Cyclones were well represented at the OHL draft this past weekend, with four current Cyclones, and two former Cyclones selected.

Travis Konecny, who was born in Clachan, and grew up playing with the Chatham-Kent Cyclones until only a few seasons ago, was selected first overall by the Ottawa 67s. Konecny led the Alliance AAA league in scoring this past season. The last two players selected first overall have gone on to win the OHL’s rookie of the year award.

In the fifth round, Trent Fox was chosen by the Erie Otters 80th overall. Fox, a Thamesville native, played for the Chatham-Kent Cyclones until last year. This season, he played for the London Jr. Knights Gold. Last season, Fox also won a Kent High School Championship with Dresden. Trent’s brother Dane Fox, has played for the Erie Otters the past two seasons.

Also going in the fifth round was Wallaceburg District Secondary School student, and Chatham-Kent Cyclones starting goalie Brendan Johnston. Johnston was selected 97th overall by the Windsor Spitfires. Johnston was the WDSS Tartans MVP last season.

Joining Johnston at the Spitfires camp this summer, will be Chatham-Kent Secondary School student Drew Marlatt. An assistant captain with the Chatham-Kent Cyclones, Marlatt was chosen in the ninth round, 163rd overall by the Windsor Spitfires.

Also going in the ninth round was Marlatt and Johnston’s Chatham-Kent Cyclones teammate James McEwan. McEwan, who attends Ursuline College in Chatham, was picked 172nd overall by the Guelph Storm.

Sarnia resident, and current Chatham-Kent Cyclones defender Mike Zottl was the next player chosen with CK ties. Zottl went in the 13th round, 244th overall to the Mississauga IceDogs.

These local players will now be competing for roster spots with GOJHL Junior B teams and their OHL teams next season.
