Blommers Stars As Hawks Take Silver
The Chatham-Kent Secondary School Senior Boys basketball team earned a silver medal at the Fanshawe Basketball Tournament held in London this past weekend.
In the final, CKSS lost a hard fought 56-47 battle to Sarnia St. Pat’s. Sarnia shot 72% in the first half, and the Golden Hawks, playing in their 3rd game of the day, didn’t have the energy to rebound. Tournament All-Star Marley Blommers lead the Hawks with 20 points in the championship, while Ian Smart chipped in with 9 points and 11 rebounds. Blommers, a Junior aged athlete in grade 10, has been a starter all season for the Golden Hawks, and has played club basketball in Detroit.
The tournament started with a victory on Friday over the Banting Broncos 50-42. Smart scored 16, Nick Ladd had 11, and Blommers netted 10.
Saturday morning the Hawks defeated the Westminster Wildcats of London 57-36. Blommers scored 18 in the win, while Joel Barwick had 9, Smart 8, and Jake Lindley 8, displaying the Hawks’ balanced attack. Smart also had 12 rebounds and 7 assists in the contest.
In the semi-final Saturday afternoon, CKSS defeated Saunders Sabres 68-51. Dan Allman lead the Hawks with 20 points, and Ian Smart had a triple-double of 14 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds. The Hawks played some of their best basketball in the second half, out-scoring the Sabres 35-12 after intermission, but couldn’t carry it through the final against Sarnia.
The team has it’s exam break for the next 10 days, then finish their tournament schedule by going to Hamilton for the Silver Fox Invitational January 30-February 1.
