The UCC Lancers and Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks played in a heated contest at Erickson Arena Wednesday afternoon in high school LKSSAA girls hockey action.

Katreena Whiteye, who plays with the Bluewater Hawks in the PWHL, opened the scoring for the UCC Lancers in the first period, with assists going to Aliyah Whiteye and Hannah McEachran.

On the powerplay in the second period, the Lancers struck again on a goal by Lauren Nicholson. Assisting on the play were Madison Lalonde and Sydnee Baker. The trio accounted for 6 of UCC’s 7 goals last week in their 7-1 drubbing of the LKCS Cardinals.

In the third, the CKSS Golden Hawks came to life. Sydney Sabourin, on an incredible individual effort, broke in late in the game to score, and make the score 2-1.

With their net empty however, the Hawks were unable to capitalize and even the game, giving the UCC Lancers the 2-1 win. CKSS’ netminder, grade 9 Mikayla Demaiter, who plays for the Chatham Outlaws Bantam A, was solid in the losing effort, making 43 saves.

UCC improves to 2-0 on the season, while CKSS fell to 1-1.

UCC travels to face the Ridgetown Royals next week, while CKSS visits the LKCS Cardinals.
