Hawks Win At Crusader Cup

The Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks girls hockey team improved their season record to 8-1 this year, winning the B Division Championship at the London Crusader Cup tournament this week.

Monday, the Hawks opened against the reigning OFSAA champion Stratford St. Michael Warriors, falling 2-0 in a closely contested game.

The Hawks would rebound in the afternoon defeating Brantford Assumption 5-0. Shayna Daly had a hat trick for CKSS, while Hunter Gagner and Ryanne Logan had singles. Jessie McPherson had the shutout

To open Tuesday’s competition, CKSS continued to find the net defeating the Belle River Nobels 6-0. Payton Sabourin had a hat trick, while Shayna Daly scored twice, and Carly Belanger notched the other. McPherson again took the shutout in net.

Receiving a bye to the final, the Hawks facing this year’s ‘AAA’ OFSAA hosts, Gonzaga (Mississauga). Belanger and Daly scored for CKSS in regulation, but the game ended in a 2-2 tie. Going directly to a shootout, Belanger and captain Sydney Sabourin scored, while Marandee Hunter stopped 2 of 3 shooters to lift the Golden Hawks to a 4-3 win.

Sydney Sabourin had 5 assists over the two days, while Belanger and Camille Blain each added 3 assists.

The CKSS Hawks are back in action next week hosting the Ridgetown Royals Wednesday, December 14 for a 2:30pm puck drop at Erickson Arena.
