Morrison continues his hot hitting at the pro level

No matter what level of baseball he plays at, Evan Morrison can hit.

The Wheatley native just finished up his first season of minor league baseball, and although it’s a small sample size, he finished with a .321 batting average and a .393 on-base percentage, playing 16 games for the Hub City Spartanburgers. The Spartanburgers are the High A minor league affiliate of the Texas Rangers.

Just as an apples to orange comparison, the top batting average currently amongst qualified hitters in the MLB is .318.

Morrison made his pro debut this summer, shortly after getting drafted in the 10th round by the Rangers in this summer’s Major League Baseball draft. Following the draft, Morrison spent a few weeks in Arizona at the Rangers’ spring training complex, then played his first pro game on August 19.

Morrison split his time at shortstop and second base for Hub City.

Morrison shined for the past two years in a Chatham-Kent Barnstormers uniform. Last year, Morrison won the league, then known as the Intercounty Baseball League, with a .422 batting average, winning the league’s rookie-of-the-year trophy. He was having an excellent season this year with the Barnstormers until he was drafted by the Rangers and changing his baseball trajectory.

This past spring, Morrison had an All-American senior season at Grand Valley State University.
