Mackinnon, Zimmer Win Kent Golf Titles

Golf-Hole-Photo-Esteban-MaringoloChatham-Kent Secondary School’s Brookie Mackinnon needed playoff holes to take the victory, but the grade 9 student finished her first ever Kent High School tournament with the County title.

At Deer Run Golf Course near Blenheim, Mackinnon and Julia Moretto tied with rounds of 103, and needed a playoff to decide who would be the Kent Champion. After Mackinnon shot a double bogey on the opening extra hole, Moretto shot a triple bogey, giving the CKSS grade 9 student the Kent High School win.

Along with Nara Sonu (108) and Tess Scamen (111), Mackinnon also was a part of the team champions representing the CKSS Golden Hawks.

Other top girls finishers were Mallory Martin of Dresden (111) and Emma Kopinak and Erin Kopinak of Tilbury, who each shot 114.

In the boys division, a bizarre finish gave UCC’s Aaron Zimmer the Kent title. After finishing with a 79, tied with Ridgetown’s Carson McKinlay, a playoff was needed to decide the champion. Zimmer however, had originally thought he shot a 77. After being congratulated at the clubhouse, McKinlay left the course before the official scorecard tallies could take place, where it was revealed Zimmer shot a 77, and a playoff was needed. With McKinlay absent however, the title was awarded to Zimmer.

UCC’s team of Zimmer, Sean Friedrich (81), Owen Dorssers (84), and Brendan Seys (85) won the boys team title.

Wallaceburg’s Evan Gihuly was third in the tournament, shooting an 80, while John McGregor’s Cameron Moore tied for fourth with an 81.

The top teams and individuals qualify for the SWOSSAA championships next week in Kingsville.
