Lucarelli wins Athletes’ Fuel Cup championship

The finals of the Athletes’ Fuel Cup were held on Aug. 19 with Team Lucarelli coming out on top, defeating Team Griffith 6-3.

Scoring for Team Lucarelli were Austin Thompson with two goals, and singles going to Anthony Lucarelli, Cam Symons, Lucas Laprise and Will Redford. Goaltender Jack Martin was named the player of the game.

Seth Griffith, Brayden Degelas and Damon Tope scored for Team Griffith.

Anthony Lucarelli was named the tournament’s most valuable player in the tournament, which provides local professional, college and junior hockey players an opportunity to prepare for their upcoming seasons by playing against top-notch competition.

“It’s all for fun, but it’s just some great players from around the area getting out here and having a great time,” Lucarelli said.

Lucarelli has played in the Athletes Fuel Cup for a few years, but this is his first year he has captained a team in the tournament.

He said it was a cool experience to have a team with his name on the jersey.

“Feels great, it was a great effort by all three lines. Everybody was playing their heart out. I couldn’t be more happy,” Lucarelli said after the victory.

Team Griffith beat Team Goure 5-4 in overtime in the semi-final to advance to the final. Seth Griffith, Brayden Degelas (overtime winner), Parker Graham, Everitt Swayze, Cam Arnold scored for Team Griffith, while Gage Brandon scored a pair of goals and Deni Goure and Casey Tellier added single markers for Team Goure.

Seth Griffith, who is going into his 13th professional hockey season, was named the player of the game.

Team Lucarelli roster included: Anthony Lucarelli, Declan Waddick, Austin Thompson, Cam Symons, Owen Kalp, Lucas Laprise, Derek Nevills, Tessa Janecke, Logan Bell, Dante McKaig, Brady Robertson, Abby Stonehouse, Cam Sherman, Fiona Waddick, Will Redford, Travis DeCook, Cade Merritt, Jack Martin.

Anthony Lucarelli is going into his second season with Long Island University, a NCAA Division I program. A defensive forward, Lucarelli had 15 points in 29 games for the Sharks in his freshman year.
