Lai wins Ontario junior amateur at Maple City

St. Thomas golfer Andrea Lai was the winner of the Ontario Junior Girls Amateur Golf Championship held at Maple City Golf and Country Club this past week.

Lai put together a composed and consistent four-round performance to earn the provincial title.

On Thursday, Lai finished the championship at 1-over-par 289 (71-78-70-70), recording back-to-back rounds of 70 to earn a three-stroke victory. After beginning the final round tied for second, Lai’s steady play in the final round moved her past the field to secure the championship.

“It still sounds surreal, I am out of words,” Lai said when asked how it felt to be the provincial champion.

“I really wanted to win this,” Lai told CKSN after the victory. “Especially this week coming in, I’ve been feeling that my game is there.”

Lai won OFSAA gold as a Grade 9 student in the fall.

Alexis Card of Whistle Bear Golf Club, who entered the final round atop the leaderboard, finished runner-up at 4-over-par 292 (70-76-72-74), while Avery Nordman of Canadian Golf & Country Club claimed third at 5-over-par 293 (75-73-73-72).

Maple City’s own Kassandra Rombouts fired a 72 on her final round today to finish 18th overall.
