Memorial Cup coming to Wheatley on Tuesday

Members of the Canadian Hockey League champion Kitchener Rangers, including Wheatley’s own Cameron Arquette, will be visiting the Wheatley Legion on Tuesday, August 4, with the Memorial Cup in tow.

The evening will begin with a Legion colour parade and blessing of the cup at 5:30, followed by a chance for local residents to see the trophy and have their picture taken until 8 o’clock.

Kitchener beat the WHL’s Everett Silvertips in the championship game this past May to capture their third CHL title in franchise history. In four games at the Memorial Cup, Arquette earned a goal and two assists.

Due to the large number of junior hockey teams in the CHL, the Memorial Cup is often called the hardest trophy to win in hockey.

Cameron Arquette 2006 Kitchener Rangers

Ian Jacobs 1999 Ottawa 67s

Jacobs is from Walpole Island. He was drafted by the Florida Panthers in the eighth round of the NHL draft. He played minor pro hockey for five years.

Dave Craievich 1990 Oshawa Generals

From Chatham, Craievich played locally for the Wallaceburg Lakers before going to the OHL. A 1991 seventh-round draft pick of the New Jersey Devils, Craievich has a long minor pro career and was inducted into the ECHL’s Hall of Fame.

Perry Pappas 1993 Soo Greyhounds

A Chatham native, Pappas played junior hockey for the Dresden Jr. Kings and the Chatham Micmacs before going to Sault Ste. Marie. He was a winner in the Soo, winning two OHL championships and going to the OHL finals three times.
