Mitchell wins fifth consecutive provincial golf title

John Monture of Lower Mohawk/Six Nations won the men’s title, and Walpole Island First Nation’s Cheryl Mitchell won the women’s title at the at the Ontario Indigenous golf championship held last week in Caledonia.

For the fifth consecutive year, Walpole Island’s Cheryl Mitchell has won the Ontario Indigenous golf championship overall women’s title.

The tournament was held Aug. 17-19 at MontHill Golf and Country Club in Caledonia.

Mitchell also led all three rounds, opening with a 68 before carding rounds of 72 and 69 to finish at 209 (-7), She finished 18 shots ahead of second-place finisher Matilida Gordon of Six Nations. Moriviantown’s Savana Smith was third at 228 (72, 77, 79), and Ridgetown’s Mya Summers was sixth at 251 (86, 85, 80).

A former standout athlete at Wallaceburg District Secondary School, Mitchell (nee Tooshkenig) played college golf at Kent State and Oakland University. She currently lives in Ohio, and is a married mother of two.
