Whether he was wearing the Chatham Maroons jersey, or playing for the Estevan Bruins in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, Rorey Elson was a fan favourite.
It’s very likely he will be an instant fan favourite when he suits up for his freshman season with the Neumann Knights Elson has committed to Neumann University (NCAA Division III) in Aston, PA., for the 2026-27 season.
Elson played the past two years in Estevan. Prior to that, he played for his hometown Chatham Maroons.
Elson said Neumann is a great fit both on and off the ice.
“They fit my needs academically and athletically,” Elson said. “They have a very strong business program, and they have an incredible internship program to get real business experience,” Elson said in a statement.
Elson was an assistant captain with the Maroons and was the Bruins’ captain last year.
Along with his leadership capabilities, Elson’s grit, energy, and work-ethic are all qualities Bruins’ head coach and general manager, Drew Kocur said will make him a valuable asset at the next level.
“He’s great in the community, always willing to give back, and he brings a never-quit mentality each day at the rink which is a great character trait to have in life,” Kocur said. “We’re very happy for Rorey to get the opportunity to continue his hockey journey and do it while attending post-secondary. He’s worked very hard for this and to see it come to fruition, I couldn’t be happier for him.”
In addition to his play on the ice, Elson was also recognized as the Bruins’ RBC Community Ambassador this past season. He was the face of the Bruins in the community during his time in Estevan.
Elson said his enthusiasm for getting out and volunteering in the community comes naturally from his own experience being on the other side as a young student at McNaughton Avenue Public School.
“I know when I was growing up, a lot of hockey players used to come to my school and when I see those kids now I just think of myself [back then],” he said. “I’d always be asking questions and they’d always brighten my day, so that’s what I try and do when I’m in the community,” Elson said in a statement.
Elson didn’t just show up in representing his hockey team in the community at various events, he jumped in with both feet, something he learned from his dad Mike Elson, who is a scout with the OHL’s Erie Otters.
“When I was growing up, my dad always taught me – whatever you’re doing, do it 100 percent, so if we’re on the ice I’ll give it 100 percent and if we’re in the community I give it 100 percent.”
